The Art of Chinese Knotting
This project explores the art of traditional Chinese knotting, paying homage to the tradition that has evolved through thousands of years. As a distinctly Chinese symbol,
the art is no longer as practiced among the younger generations, the beauty of its craftsmanship lost amidst the overwhelming trends that come and go.
This project is my way of bringing to light the beauty of this traditional craft, but expanding it beyond its existing forms. Through understanding the foundations of Chinese knotting,
I hope to bring a modern take and introduce this art into fashion, ensuring the longevity of the craftsmanship.
In this project, I learned different types of Chinese knotting with different thicknesses of satin cords, and then explored more materials such as beads and macrame cords.
Beyond the techniques of knotting, I was inspired by the shape of knots – the way different cords interweave – and explored that through machine knitting.
